Hearts Wide Shut

These are the things we have chosen to forget:
That our needs would barely scratch the Earth,
But our wants will destroy her whole.

That the emptiness we feel
Has nothing to do with food.
That so many men inhabit an emotional wasteland.
That so many women are sick from smiling on.
That the loss of something dearly hoped for
Needs mourning too.

These are the things we have chosen to forget:
That we have all seen pain
Inflicted on those we love
And that we know the perpetrators well.
That we had to shut our eyes,
Our ears, our hearts sometimes,
Just in order to move on.

That we will tell no one this,
Least of all, ourselves.
